Immigration has always been a popular problem in the United States, but it has become especially prevalent in the media in the past twenty years.  The issue of illegal immigration has taken over headlines in numerous news articles and reports and politicians make sure that they make their stance on immigration known when running for office.  It is not a surprise that immigration has been a popular subject of many movies; this theme is present in several alien invasion movies.

In movies such as Independence Day, Men in Black, and War of the Worlds we are shown the dangers of aliens invading our planet.  These aliens want to exterminate the natives and takeover our world.  They chase us from our homes and use up all of our resources so that we will not be able to survive.   As President Thomas Whitmore in Independence Day says, “They’re like locusts. They’re moving from planet to planet… their whole civilization. After they’ve consumed every natural resource they move on… and we’re next.”   In order to save our world and ourselves, our heroes, whether they are the president, a fighter pilot, or a dockworker, must fight these aliens and remove them from our planet and make them go back to where they came from.  Men in Black is one the best examples on film commenting on modern immigration.  Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones play two agents who monitor alien activity on earth; part of their job is to send illegal aliens back to their home planet.

I believe these movies help those politicians who are very much against immigration.  Some of points that you can get from these movies are that immigrants will use up our resources and take our jobs just as the aliens want to use up our planet’s resources and takeover the planet and it is up to the all-American man to remove these foreigners from our homeland.  These movies make people want to band together and fight off foreigners from invading our homes.  Those politicians and candidates who are completely against legal immigration benefit from these movies and the ideology they contain.

Very good analysis! I think there might be a secondary theme going on, too: that “we” (e.g., those of us in the U.S. and western developed world) are the ones consuming all the resources of the earth; we, collectively, are the aliens that are consuming and we are the ones who need to be fought. In some ways, maybe these films speak to our fears about feeling out of control in the face of climate change, the increase in natural disasters, and endangered species. The films provide symbolic resolution for something we can’t figure out how to fight: the loss of our earth’s resources. Or maybe that’s just me that sees this theme in these films… Excellent job.
