Blog #11: The Colbert Report

I watched The Colbert Report titled Egyptian Democracy where Stephen interviewed Christiane Amanpour about the current situation taking place in Egypt. I felt that Stephen did a good job in mixing critical news information with humor and satire. I would consider The Colbert Report a nontraditional news source because of the comedic twists and joking nature that Stephen utilizes in his shows. While some individuals seem to be frustrated with the more nonchalant nature that newspapers and televisions news shows are taking on, I believe they provide a fun and enjoyable way to understand what is going on in the world. Major complaints were voiced in the “Public Opinions” article stating that it is not appropriate for opinion pieces to be placed with the news articles. In having a newspaper laid out this way, I believe it asks the reader to fine tune what they are reading and be able to provide their own opinions, either arguing or agreeing with the opinion pieces.

I found a lot of very important information through The Colbert Report that I did not find through The New York Times article “Update on the Middle East.” As both Stephen and Christiane described and compared, the Iranian revolution took about a year to occur and create an uprising, while the revolution in Egypt took only eighteen days. Christiane believes that the revolution in Egypt will last because of the technological advancements today that are broadcasting information around the world. In searching for a Democratic leader, Christiane and Stephen discussed if Egypt is ready for this kind of change and if they are capable of having a Democratic country.

After watching the show online, I began to look at comments that many other viewers had left about their own opinions regarding Egypt. In this way, The Colbert Report can be an example of convergent journalism because of the varying broadcasts it has the capability for. The show is aired on Comedy Central, as well as put on The Colbert Report website where fans can watch and comment on videos. All in all, I was very impressed with the amount of information I was able to gather from The Colbert Report. While Stephen presents his news in a different way, using humor and satire, he is able to get his point across and have people enjoy understanding what is occurring in the world around us.
